FAQ's

Soakaway systems are used to manage surface water that is collected by a drainpipe and is connected into a plastic porous walled chamber(crates) in the ground. It is wrapped in TERRAM to prevent contamination and then surrounded by shingle to allow the collected surface water to filter out into the ground.

This usually has a simple explanation- the drain line is most likely blocked by leaves or silt. The best solution would be to gain access to the drain with a high-pressure jet and flush it through, in some cases it could be more serious, and the pipe may have collapsed (often caused by roots).

A soakaway needs to be sited at least 5 meters away from the building and in accordance with building control.

Typically, a soakaway should be at a depth of 1.3 to 1.5 meters deep allowing enough fill to go over the top.
